Lockport Police Issue 100 Tickets During Distracted Driving Crackdown
Officers handed out 84 tickets for drivers using their cell phones while behind the wheel and also pulled over 11 drivers for speeding.
LOCKPORT, IL — Lockport Police Department officers issued 100 citations to local drivers and also handed out 11 speeding tickets during a recent campaign designed to crack down on distracting driving.
The department said Monday that officers handed out 84 violations to drivers who were not using a hands-free device to use their cell phones while behind the wheel. In addition to the 11 speeding tickets, officers also issued 16 moving violation or equipment tickets during the month-long enforcement period that ended on Saturday.
“Distracted Driving Awareness Month allowed the Lockport Police Department to bring a heightened awareness to stop motorists from engaging in deadly behavior,” police said in a news release.

The Lockport Police Department worked in conjunction with state and other local law enforcement agencies during the enforcement period. Police warn drivers that using their cell phones while operating a vehicle in Illinois is not only dangerous but illegal.
Federal funds issued by the Illinois Department of Transportation provided funding for the distracted driving campaign.
