LOCKPORT, IL — A 79-year-old Lockport woman died from her injuries after being pulled from a fire at a Lockport condo building Tuesday night.

The woman's name is being withheld pending notification of family, according to the Will County Coroner's office.

Lockport firefighters were called Tuesday just after 8:30 p.m. for a report of smoke smoking at a fire in a two-story, eight-unit condo building in the 1100 block of Division Street. First responders found a fire in one of the first floor units, and searched the condo for occupants. Firefighters found the elderly woman unresponsive and quickly pulled her from the building to a waiting ambulance.

The victim was transported in critical condition to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where she later died. An autopsy Wednesday showed the woman suffered multiple thermal injuries.

All other occupants were safely evacuated, with no additional injuries reported, said Deputy Fire Chief Frank Blaskey. While the fire was contained to a single unit, the other occupants were unable to stay in the building due to smoke damage.

The fire was upgraded to a full still, bringing in mutual aid assistance from New Lenox and Northwest Homer Fire, while Bolingbrook, East Joliet, Homer, Plainfield, and Romeoville Fire covered the Lockport stations.

The Lockport Fire Investigators and the Lockport Police Department along with assistance from Homer and Lemont Fire Investigators are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
