LTHS Board Selects New Student Board Members

LOCKPORT, IL — At its Monday meeting, the LTHS Board of Education selected four student leaders to serve as the Student Representatives, according to a release from the District.

The LTHS D205 Board of Education approved Averi Colella and Mia Fontanetta, senior
students, to serve as the Student Representatives for the LTHS D205 Board of Education for
the 2024-25 school year. Student Board of Education members are assigned to sit with the
Board during all of its formal, monthly meetings and any special meetings or workshops where
and when appropriate, the District said.

The LTHS D205 Board of Education also approved Wazeera Shekoni, a senior student, for the role of Student Board Member on the Board's Finance and Facilities Committee and approved Michael Dierkas, a senior student, for the role of Student Board Member on the Board's Curriculum Committee. Shekoni and Dierkas will serve their roles for the 2024-25 school year, according to the District.

“We are really excited to have student board members on our board. They represent their peers and give us their feedback. They are the voice of our students,” said Ann Lopez-Caneva, LTHS D205 Board President.

The Student Board Members will represent their classmates at the monthly Board of Education
meetings. While the Student Board Members will not vote, they will provide important insights
on life as a student at Lockport Township High School.

“In our second year of appointing student Board of Education members, LTHS D205 continues to
put a high priority of putting student voice at the table,” LTHS D205 Superintendent Dr.
Robert McBride said in a release.

In April 2024, 26 students applied for the position of Student Board Member, the District said. In May, an administrative team and a Board subcommittee reviewed all applications and identified 12 finalists for an interview with the Board of Education. After the interviews took place, the Board
selected Averi Colella, and Mia Fontanetta as Student Board members, and Michael Dierkes, and
Wazeera Shekon as Committee members.
