District 153 Mourns Longtime Teacher, Coach, and Supporter

Carole Smith taught math at James Hart School for 15 years before retiring in 2021, the district shared on social media.

HOMEWOOD, IL — The Homewood District 153 family is grieving the loss of one of its own, with the death of beloved longtime teacher, coach, and supporter Carole Smith. Smith, 69, spent 15 years as a math teacher at James Hart School, before retiring in 2021.

"Even after retirement, she continued to be a treasured part of the James Hart family as a frequent substitute teacher," the district shared on Facebook.

Smith's involvement extended beyond the classroom, onto the court and field. She coached volleyball, and was the inaugural coach of the James Hart softball team—a commitment she maintained until she retired.

"Carole had a knack with providing a calm sanctuary for every student to feel their worth and celebrate every success, no matter small or large,"her obituary reads. "She was a pillar of James Hart’s mission that every student will learn and be served.

"...As a coach, Carole no doubt wanted to win, yet she also had the ability to recruit athletes’ with coachable qualities, to harness their strengths and improve, no matter their ability."

Her dedication to her community shone through in all she did, her obituary reads.

"Carole’s community was always important to her," according to the obituary. "She made it priority to be involved, to help where needed. From art mom, President of Homewood Softball, and St. Joe’s volleyball coach and coordinator; she always showed up for her girls and Homewood. Her aim was to inspire, improve, and enhance everyone’s lives."

Smith leaves behind husband John, daughters Allison and Noreen, and grandchildren Lincoln, Fitzgerald, Elle, Henry, and William. Read the full obituary here.

District 153 on Thursday will honor Smith's memory at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, August 11, with a moment of silence before the first softball game of the season at Patriots Park, 1328 187th St, Homewood.

Viewing will be at the Tews Funeral Home on Friday, August 12, from 3 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at Saint Joseph in Homewood for Mass of the Resurrection at 10:30 am. For additional information, contact 708-798-5300.
