Homewood Police Crack Down On Speeding With Special Patrol Detail
The new task force will not only patrol high-speed zones but also work as an educational group to warn drivers of speed-related crashes.

HOMEWOOD, IL — In response to a rise in fatal traffic crashes, Homewood police are organizing a special group to crack down on speeding within the village.
According to a spokesperson from the Homewood Police Department, traffic crash fatalities in Illinois rose from 1,197 in 2020 to 1,360 in 2021. Among the common causes for crashes, officials said, speeding is at the top.
"One of the most common variables of these traffic crash fatalities is excessive speed," police said in a social media statement.

The special detail will focus on excessive speeding within village jurisdiction and attempt to identify what could be a deadly crash before it happens. The detail will not only be on patrol but will take an educational approach to ensure drivers understand the possible outcomes of speeding.
"The mission of this detail is to bring awareness to drivers about the potential consequences of speeding and reduce speeding-related fatalities, injuries, and crashes," the release stated.

While officials have not released which areas the detail will focus on, some residents have put in requests for additional patrols on 183rd Street and Ridge Road due to dangerous driving and speeds.
