Prince Harry, Chance The Rapper Join Obama Foundation Summit

The South Side hip-hop artist will perform at a community concert to close out the inaugural 2-day event in Chicago.

CHICAGO, IL — Prince Harry will be one of the speakers at the Obama Foundation's inaugural two-day summit for about 500 civic leaders from Chicago and around the world, the organization announced. Chance the Rapper will perform at and work as the creative director for the event's closing community concert, which also will include The National and Gloria Estefan. The summit will be Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at the Hyatt Hotel at McCormick Place.

The summit is a chance for young leaders to hear speakers and exchange ideas. Topics for the event's five, main-stage presentations will range from encouraging young people down a civic path to technology’s role in creating equitable and inclusive communities, according to a statement by the Obama Foundation released Thursday.

The prince of Wales will talk about youth leadership as a global change agent. He also will discuss his work with Full Effect, a British program young people. Since July of 2016, Prince Harry has been dating Meghan Markle, a 2003 Northwestern grad. The community concert to close out the summit will be at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 1. It will be live-streamed at the foundation's website.

"It’s such an honor to be able to help creative direct this show," Chance the Rapper said in a video announcing the concert. "That’s because I am blessed to be part of a generation with an inherent sense of self. One that is inspired not just to talk about what needs to be changed — but get up and change it."

Presentations at the summit will be held by a variety of artists and civic and business leaders. Other speakers include former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, Chobani founder Hamdi Ulukaya, National Rural Assembly Director Whitney Kimball Coe, artist Bahia Shehab, writer Brian Alexander and artist Theaster Gates.
