Drunken Golf Cart Driver Arrested After Crashing on Way to New Year’s Eve Party: Cops

He told the cops, "I almost made it too," police said.

LOCKPORT, IL — A drunken golf cart driver got into a crash on his way to a New Year’s Eve party, police said, then bragged to a cop that he “almost made it too.”

Mark Fisher, 55, got sideswiped by a Nissan Altima as he drove a Yamaha golf cart east on High Road about 7:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

The 64-year-old driver of the Altima told an officer he was driving south on State Street when he noticed the golf cart turning in front of him, police said, and that he swerved into the northbound lane. The Altima still reportedly struck the golf cart.

Fisher reportedly admitted to an officer that he doesn’t have a driver’s license. He also conceded —with slurred speech — that he had four or five beers, according to a police report.

The officer asked Fisher why he was driving a golf cart in the street in the first place, the report said, and Fisher explained, “Well, I was going to my buddy’s house for a New Year’s party, and didn’t think driving a car was a good idea tonight.”

Then, “without being prompted,” Fisher told the officer, “I almost made it too.”

Fisher was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. He was released on $300 bond.

Prosecutors have filed a petition to seize Fisher’s golf cart.
