Great-Grandma Killed By Allergic Reaction to Antibiotic at Hospital: Lawsuit

JOLIET, IL — An allergic reaction to an antibiotic administered at a Sycamore hospital killed a Plainfield great-grandmother, according to a lawsuit filed in Will County court.

Brian Pickle, the son of Lydia Pickle, is suing Kindred Hospital, three doctors and Fox Valley Medical Associates.

Lydia Pickle was admitted to Kindred Hospital on Jan. 10, 2015, “for treatment related to her diagnosis of MRSA and endocarditis” — the inflammation of the heart’s lining, the lawsuit said. Thirteen days later, “medical professionals ordered and intravenously administered vancomycin,” an antibiotic, the suit said.

Lydia Pickle then “suffered respiratory failure and had to be intubated and placed on a ventilator,” the lawsuit said. She died at Kindred Hospital on Feb. 10, the suit said.

According to the lawsuit, “Lydia Pickle’s medical records from Kindred Hospital-Sycamore and her previous treatment facilities and providers evidence that she was allergic to vancomycin.”
