Imprisoned Convict Charged With Joliet Attempted Murder

JOLIET, IL — A convict serving time in prison for hitting a cop in the face after refusing to leave the library was charged Friday with attempted murder.

Devon Herron, 20, has been locked up in Vienna Correctional Center since November. Before that, Herron had been incarcerated at the Will County jail since July.

Herron was sentenced to two years in prison for hitting a police officer in the face on July 25.

A security guard had asked Herron to leave the library but the Joliet man would not go, according to court records. Security called the cops and a responding officer walked up to Herron and told him he had to leave. Herron responded by hitting the officer in the face.

Herron is also serving four years for a Cook County residential burglary conviction.

On Friday, Herron was charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery by causing great bodily harm, and aggravated battery in a public place. According to court records, Herron committed these crimes the same day he struck the police officer.

The criminal complaint detailing the charges filed against Herron was not available Friday.
