JOLIET, IL — The Will County jail accidentally freed an inmate Thursday morning.
The inadvertently released inmate — 40-year-old Carlos Johnson of Bolingbrook — remains on the loose.
Johnson had been in custody since July on forgery charges. According to jail records, Judge David Carlson found Johnson in contempt of court on Nov. 10 and sentenced him to two days in jail, even though he was already in jail.

Johnson’s attorney, Robert Lewin, said jail staff released his client because the contempt sentence had been served.
“It’s pretty funny,” Lewin said. “Good for Will County.”

Johnson’s bond had already been set at $75,000, which he had apparently been unable to post. Another $75,000 failure to appear arrest warrant was issued Thursday morning. Lewin, who said he does not know where Johnson has gone, objected to the arrest warrant, according to court records.
The sheriff’s department did not immediately respond to calls for comment.
