Joliet Killer Taken Off The Street, John Hernandez Captured: Police

A search warrant was executed at John Hernandez's house in the 500 block of Campbell Street over the weekend and he was captured.

JOLIET — A Joliet man with a long arrest record, John "Johnny" Hernandez of the 500 block of Campbell Street, has been arrested on first-degree murder charges in connection with the June 1 deadly shooting inside the living room of a house in the 400 block of Krakar Avenue.

The shooting killed one man and injured two others.

Joliet police sergeant Dwayne English made the announcement on Father's Day.

According to English, Hernandez, now 22, was arrested and taken to the Will County Adult Detention Facility on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a gun.

English said that during an extensive investigation into the June 1 shooting, Joliet detectives identified Hernandez as a suspect involved in the shooting, which resulted in the death of 23-year-old Fernando Contreras, and gunshot injuries to two other men, ages 20 and 27.

The Will County State’s Attorney Office approved filing the murder charges and on Saturday morning at 8 a.m., Joliet police detectives, officers and members of the Joliet Police Department Special Operations Squad and Crisis Negotiation Team executed a search warrant at Hernandez’s residence in the 500 block of Campbell Street, English said. Hernandez was found in the house and was taken into custody without incident.

He was transported to the Joliet Police Department for processing and then was transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

Joliet Patch has had numerous stories about John Hernandez over the past few years. He's been charged in connection with several drive-by shootings across Joliet, and he spent roughly six months in the Will County Jail from October 2022 until mid-April 2023.
