JOLIET — During recent weeks, the Joliet Police Department often finds itself responding to at least one shooting per day. On Labor Day morning, officers learned someone fired at least 10 gunshots in a southeast neighborhood. The shooting happened while most of the community's residents were sound asleep.

According to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English, at 6:28 a.m. on Labor Day, officers responded to the 600 block of Whitley Avenue, which is near Rowell Avenue, for a past report of shots fired. The officers discovered more than 10 spent shell casings in an alley behind the 600 block of Whitley Avenue. After speaking to residents in the neighborhood, police determined that the shooting occurred sometime during the overnight hours between the hours of 10 p.m. and 3 a.m.

One house where people are living was struck by gunfire numerous times. There were no reported injuries. Officers canvassed the area and were unable to locate any victims or other property struck.
