Stateville Escapee Captured in Atlanta After 14 Years on the Run: Report

He was sentenced to eight years in prison nearly 14 years ago.

A convict who escaped from Stateville Correctional Center nearly 14 years ago was captured in Atlanta by federal agents, according to media reports.

Jorge Soberanis-Rumaldo, 58, was sent to Stateville to serve an eight-year sentence for a Cook County drug conviction in March 2003. He escaped three months later while assigned to a work detail, according to the Atlanta-Journal-Constitution.

The Journal-Constitution reported that Soberanis-Rumaldo was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

ICE deportation officers arrested Jorge Soberanis-Rumaldo as part of a targeted enforcement operation, ICE spokesman for the Atlanta office Bryan Cox said,” the paper reported. “Officials said Soberanis-Rumaldo was in the U.S. unlawfully.”

CBS reported that Soberanis-Rumaldo was captured by U.S. Marshals.

He is expected to be removed from the country as soon as his criminal charges are resolved,” CBS said.

Soberanis-Rumaldo was No. 6 on the list of Illinois’ most wanted fugitives.
