JOLIET — The Joliet Police Department announced the weekend arrest of 33-year-old resident Daniel Cervantes-Garcia in connection with allegations that he tried to choke a woman on the city's southeast side. Cervantes landed in the Will County Jail on charges of domestic battery.

According to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English, Cervantes, who comes from the 500 block of Abe Street, was arrested near Henderson Avenue.

At 11:26 p.m. on Sunday, Joliet police responded to a house in the 400 block of South Ottawa Street for a domestic disturbance.

According to English, Cervantes-Garcia and a woman were arguing inside the house as the officers showed up. Upon seeing the officers outside, police say Cervantes-Garcia pushed the woman into a nearby room and came to the door, but refused to let officers inside the home.

Moments later, officers found the victim in the backyard and learned that she had climbed out of a window.

"It was determined that during an argument in the house, Cervantes-Garcia pushed the female down and put his hands on her neck prior to the arrival of officers," English said.

Ultimately, Cervantes-Garcia exited the front door and was placed into custody without incident.

He remained in his Will County Jail cell as of Tuesday morning.
