Riverside Cops Increasing Patrols for Super Bowl Weekend

IDOT is funding the increased work for its "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.

Riverside police are asking their community just one question about Super Bowl Sunday: Are they drinking, or driving?

As part of a continued effort to keep streets safe, seat belts buckled and lives intact, the Riverside Police Department is just one of many increasing patrols this weekend in line with a statewide "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.

"If you plan on drinking alcohol while cheering on your team, pass your keys to a sober driver before the Super Bowl party begins," Sergeant Jeff Miller said in a release. "Impaired driving crashes are completely preventable. All it takes is a game plan."

The two most important tips cops can give, Miller said, are to designate a sober driver before a party and to not let your friends drive drunk or under the influence of drugs. Other suggestions in the release included calling a taxi or ride share to get home, reporting drunk drivers to police, staying the night where you got drunk and buckling up in the car. He said increased police patrols will also mean officers will be looking for unbuckled seat belts.

The Illinois Department of Transportation provides the funds for increased patrols as a part of its traffic safety campaign.
