Child Flown To The Hospital By Medical Helicopter After High-Speed Crash In Waukegan

A child was flown to the hospital by a medical helicopter following a high-speed crash that witnesses said was the result of a police chase that ended in Waukegan.

The crash happened around 7:05 p.m. Thursday at Genesee Street and Amstutz Expressway in Waukegan.

Waukegan Fire Marshal Todd Zupec told Lake and McHenry County Scanner the incident involved a single vehicle.

The car was traveling northbound on Genesee Street when the driver lost control and struck a tree, Zupec said.

One victim was transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where a LifeNet medical helicopter landed.

The helicopter transferred the victim to a Level 1 trauma center, Zupec said.

A second person was transported by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said that a 10-year-old child was a passenger in the vehicle.

Their condition has been stabilized but the extent of their injuries was not immediately known. A source said the child was the victim flown by helicopter.

Florip said speed was the cause of the crash.

Witnesses reported the vehicle was being pursued by North Chicago police and the vehicle was traveling recklessly at extremely high speeds.

North Chicago police officers arrested the driver of the vehicle following the incident.

The Waukegan Police Department Major Crash Unit was called to the scene to investigate, Florip said.

It is unknown if any charges have been filed yet against the driver.
