The Waukegan Fire Department transported the male victim to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

The victim was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, Chastain said.

Investigators reviewed video footage in the area and learned the pedestrian was attempting to cross southbound across Washington Street.

The pedestrian was struck by an eastbound vehicle, which fled the scene continuing eastbound on Washington Street, Chastain said.

Chastain said a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle and with damage consistent with the collision was located in North Chicago around 12:20 a.m.

That vehicle had been reported stolen to police approximately 30 minutes after the hit-and-run. The vehicle was towed and processed for evidence.

The victim’s identity is unknown and is pending an autopsy, Chastain said.

The Waukegan Police Department is investigating the identification of the driver involved.
