Man Fatally Shot With Own Gun While Fighting Waukegan Cops, Police Say
The Illinois State Police has opened an investigation into the circumstances of Wednesday's officer-involved death.

WAUKEGAN, IL — A man was fatally shot with his own gun Wednesday in Waukegan during a struggle with officers investigating a stolen car, authorities said.
Waukegan police were dispatched to the 3200 block of Grand Avenue shortly before 2:15 p.m. as part of a stolen vehicle investigation, according to Illinois State Police.
As officers arrived, a 32-year-old man tried to flee, state police said.

Citing the preliminary results of an investigation, police said the man pulled out a gun while fighting with officers.
"During the struggle, the subject’s firearm discharged and the subject was shot," according to a statement from state police, which said Waukegan police did not fire their guns.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Lake County Coroner's Office has scheduled an autopsy and the Waukegan Police Department asked the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation to open an investigation of the circumstances of the man's death.
