Lake View Bagel Store Fails Restaurant Inspection, Others Pass

See how your favorite restaurants fared on City of Chicago restaurant inspections.

Patch examined the most recent inspection reports in Lake View, and while only one failed its inspection, others passed under a few conditions.

Information has been compiled using publicly available data published to the website of the Chicago Department of Public Health's Food Protection Program.

Restaurants can pass, pass with conditions or fail using a standardized procedure. Establishments that pass don't have any critical or serious vocations. Those that receive 'pass with conditions' had serious violations, but the violations were corrected during the inspection. Failed establishments had serious violations that weren't correctable during the inspection. A fail rating does not mean the business's license is automatically suspended.

However, the critical violation was surrounding a prep cooler that didn’t maintain the proper temperature. The restaurant received a $500 fine for the cooler issue.

Fiorentino’s, 2901 N. Ashland Ave.

  • Inspection: Oct. 4
  • Result: Pass

The inspector’s comments say the restaurant must label and date all prepared foods in the freezer, as well as install a splashguard between where clean dishes are stored and where the dirty dishes are washed. The restaurant must also repair broken floor tiles in the kitchen so the floor is smooth and easily cleanable.

The walls around the dish washer and sink “with dirt and food splatter” must be cleaned, and the leak from the hot water tank must be repaired.

Temple Bar, 3001 N. Ashland Ave.

  • Inspection: Oct. 4
  • Result: Pass

The only comments the inspector had were regarding light cleaning. The comments say the restaurant must clean and maintain the exterior of the deep fryer and inside of the dish washer.

The Bagel Restaurant, 3107 N. Broadway

  • Inspection: Oct. 4
  • Result: Fail

This restaurant failed for multiple violations, according to inspector comments. The restaurant report from May of 2010 wasn’t visible to customers, resulting in a $250 fine for each day it stayed that way. In addition, the minor violations the previous inspector found were not corrected, resulting in more serious citations.

The interior of the ice bin was also found to be dirty, and bulk food containers weren’t labeled correctly, among other issues.

Rocks Lakeview, 3463 N. Broadway

  • Inspection: Oct. 3
  • Result: Pass with Conditions

While reviewing Rocks on North Broadway, the inspector found that the chemical dishwasher was not dispensing the sanitizer properly while utensils were being washed. A repairman was called, but the restaurant was still given a $500 fine.

In addition, the restaurant was asked to fix the leak under the dishwasher behind the bar and store their utensils in a different area of the kitchen.
