Chicago Flooding: Where Rain is Hitting Lake View (PHOTOS)
The nonstop downpour has pools of water affecting drivers and pedestrians. The alderman's office comments on where the trouble areas are.
Lake View may not be suffering from sinkholes like on the South Side or from floodwaters overtaking cars at the Belmont underpass in Downer’s Grove, but issues are still affecting local residents.
Sougata Deb, Ald. Tom Tunney’s (44th) director of infrastructure and special projects, says he’s been getting calls from residents concerned with standing water in Lake View, specifically near the intersection of Grace Street and Sheffield Avenue.
But Deb says standing water in the street is actually an intentional maneuver to keep Lake View basements from flooding.

“As far as basement flooding, we haven’t gotten any calls,” Deb said. “We did a pretty extensive project a year ago where water management crews cleared the sewers and added these devices called restrictors. They go in the pipe and restrict water flow. So we intestinally hold water on the street so it keeps the sewers open and doesn’t flood everyone’s basement.”
Other bouts of standing water are seen at the corner of Addison Street and Wilton Avenue near the Addison Red Line Stop, according to Patch reader Fernando Martinez.
