Cubs Blast 6 Home Runs, a Team Postseason Record, on Way to 8-6 Playoff Win
PHOTOS: Victory puts the Chicago Cubs up 2-1 in division series against St. Louis with a chance to end the series at home on Tuesday.
Dexter Fowler knocked the team’s sixth home run into the bleachers in the eighth inning. Fans were hoping to see another dominating performance by Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta in his Wrigley Field postseason debut, much like the one that got the Cubs past the Pittsburgh Pirates in the wildcard game. Instead, they were treated to a home-run show courtesy of Fowler, Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber, Starlin Castro and Jorge Soler.
The six home runs eclipse the five knocked into the stands against San Diego in Game 1 of the 1984 NLCs.
With the Cubs up 2-1 in the series, the team could clinch a spot in the National League Championship Series Tuesday night with another victory at Wrigley Field.
Monday night’s win was the first postseason victory at Wrigley since Oct. 8, 2003.
