Health Inspection: Black Slime at Yoshi's Cafe, Chinese is Too Greasy

A slew of Lake View restaurants were visited by the health inspector recently. Read the details behind the reports here on Patch.

Patch examined inspection reports in Lake View over the month of October. Information has been compiled using publicly available data published to the website of the Chicago Department of Public Health's Food Protection Program.

Restaurants can pass, pass with conditions or fail using a standardized procedure. Establishments that pass don't have any critical or serious vocations. Those that receive 'pass with conditions' had serious violations, but the violations were corrected during the inspection. Failed establishments had serious violations that weren't correctable during the inspection. A fail rating does not mean the business's license is automatically suspended.

All inspections are done on a routine canvass, unless otherwise noted.

Yoshi’s Café

3257 N. Halsted St.
Inspection Date: Nov. 13
Pass with Conditions
Comments:

  • An ice machine had a “large amount of black slime substance dripping down” into the ice bin. It was tagged and will be held until it’s cleaned, sanitized and re-inspected. Also, the inspector found four cans of Raid Roach Killer in the laundry room where clean linens were stored. Among other errors, bulk food containers weren’t labeled properly, and “dirty, encrusted towels (were) used to cover clean equipment.”

New Jeanny’s Chinese

1053 W. Belmont Ave.
Inspection Date: Nov. 6
Fail, then Pass
Comments:

  • After first failing an inspection on Nov. 2, owners at New Jeanny’s Chinese corrected mistakes and passed a follow-up inspection. Initial comments from the inspector noted “excessive grease and food debris” on the sides and interior of all cooking line equipment. Also, grease apparently covered the wall, the gas line behind the deep fryer and around the legs of the equipment.

Jersey Mike’s Subs

3152 N. Broadway
Inspection Date: Nov. 2

Editor's Note: The previous report about Jersey Mike's failing its inspection is false as the City of Chicago published the report weeks before the restaurant was slated to open. It has since been re-inspected at the appropriate date and passed.
