Standard India Closes on Belmont After 32 Years

Chicago's second oldest Indian restaurant closes in Lake View, papering up its windows and wishing customers farewell.

Lake View’s only Indian restaurant Standard India has officially shuttered its doors for good after 32 years of business.

Calling itself the second oldest Indian restaurant in Chicago, the business at 917 W. Belmont Ave. has been open since 1980 and was operated for two generations.

“Thank you for all your messages,” Standard India wrote on its website. “We look forward to hosting you again the future; however, we have currently closed this location. We will keep you apprised via the www.standardindiachicago.com website with any additional updates.”

A large sign notifying diners of the closure also hangs in the storefront’s window, which is now covered with brown paper.

Representatives at the store could not immediately be reached to comment on why they closed.

Those itching for Indian food in Lake View, however, won’t have to wait long.

Construction is under way at the former Ted’s Cleaners at 3108 N. Broadway and Crazy Chicken at 606 W. Barry Ave. The two stores will soon become into Bombay Bliss, a casual sit-down and carry-out Indian restaurant owned by the man behind The Little India restaurant in Edgewater.
