1. A Lakeview teacher who died of COVID-19 is being remembered with a memorial street sign near Funston Elementary School this week. Long time Chicago Public Schools teacher Olga Quiroga was 58 when she died after contracting the virus in October 2020. (Block Club)
2. A proposal for a new playground at Lakeview’s Nettlehorst Elementary School is in the running to be part of a $10 million grant project. The school on North Broadway has “old equipment and a faulty playing surface” on its current playground. Finalists for the Chicago Works Community Challenge initiative will be announced later this year; work would begin in 2022. (Block Club)
3. Illinois lawmakers finally approved the state’s new legislative map early Friday morning. Gov. J.B. Pritzker still needs to sign off on the map, the third attempt at drawing the state’s congressional districts based on 2020 census data. (WTTW)
4. Evanston-based Smylie Brothers Brewing Company “stealthily” opened a new Lakeview location this month after two years of construction, pandemic delays and staffing shortages. The new brewpub offers Texas-style barbecue at 3827 N. Broadway. (Eater)
5. More than 348,000 new COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered in Illinois this week, according to state health officials. The Illinois Department of Public Health reports that more than 15.5 million vaccine doses have been administered in the state since December 2020. (NBC5)
