Wrigleyville Auction Raises $100K for Slain Bears Fan (VIDEO)

The Chicago Bears hosted a fundraiser in Lake View's Wrigley neighborhood that helped raise money for a murdered fan.

Players with the Chicago Bears hosted a fundraising event at John Barleycorn near Wrigley Field Saturday for a slain fan, and according to the Orlando Sentinel, more than $100,000 was raised in his honor.

William Pettry, 42, of Lake Villa died Oct. 7 after a Florida man slashed his throat before a Bears game in Jacksonville. He left behind his stay-at home wife and three children. Pettry was the family’s sole provider and had no life insurance.

Around 400 people showed up to John Barleycorn at 3524 N. Clark Street, the Sentinel reports, where Bears tight end Kellen Davis hosted a fundraiser that raised $50,000. Another $50,000 was raised online and will go toward food and bills for the Pettry family.

"All of these people who don't even know me," Pettry’s wife said at the event, according to the Sentinel. "For all the ugly there is in the world, there is a lot of good."

Matthew Hinson, 27, is being charged with Pettry’s murder.
