Lemont Fire Protection District Receives Grant from Department of Homeland Security

Congressman Dan Lipinski announced April 19 that the district was awarded a $12,500 grant to purchase a new thermal imaging camera and a specialized washing machine.

The Lemont Fire Protection District has received a federal grant to purchase new camera equipment, Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) announced Friday.

The $12,500 grant, awarded through the Department of Homeland Security, will be used to purchase a new thermal imaging camera so firefighters can better see flames and trapped victims in smoke-filled rooms, Lipinski said in a release.

Lipinski said the grant will also allow the fire protection district to purchase a specialized washing machine to clean gear that has been used to respond to fires and incidents involving hazardous material.

“Our first responders play a critical role in keeping our communities safe. Providing them with the equipment they need to do their jobs is one of my highest priorities,” Lipinski said in the release. “I’m proud to announce this grant that will improve safety at the Lemont Fire Protection District and better serve area residents and businesses.”

The grant is awarded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. In the 2012 fiscal year, the program awarded approximately $337.5 million to fire departments and EMS organizations nationwide to enhance their response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public and first responders, Lipinski said.

Lemont Fire Chief Carl Churulo said the grant will allow the fire district to upgrade equipment that is vital to the safety of its firefighters.

"We are thankful for the congressman’s work on behalf of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program and look forward to continuing to provide top-notch service and care to our community,” Churulo said.
