Lemont High School Boys' Golf Team Places Eighth In State

LEMOT, IL — Lemont High School junior Joey Scott broke school records at the 2024 IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Golf State Finals, which were contested at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University on Oct. 18-19, according to a release from the school.
Scott tied for seventh individually, becoming the program’s first-ever two-time all-state performer. Head coach Mark Hollatz’s squad placed eighth of 12 teams.
Lemont tied for eighth after the first day of competition with a team score of 325, and advanced to the final round for the ninth time in its 14 state finals appearances, the school said in a release. It improved by 10 strokes on the second day, and ultimately placed eighth with a +72 640; that score was just four strokes from a top five finish at the event. Ottawa (+41 609) won the 2024 IHSA Class 2A State Championship, with Benton (+48 616) and Burlington Central (+52 620) also earning state trophies.

Scott performed among the event’s top golfers from the start, with birdies on the first four holes of the opening round, the school said. He was tied for fourth after the first day after shooting a +1 72, and followed that up with a +4 75.
His +5 147 was a career best at the state finals, and he became the first Lemont golfer to place among the top 10 twice in state finals play, according to LHS. Scott first earned all-state accolades after tying for ninth at the 2023 IHSA Class 2A State Finals.

Senior Matt Devoy was Lemont’s best performer in the final round, firing a career-best +3 74; he tied for 27th overall (+13 155; 81-74). Senior Aidan Leonard (+28 170; 90-80) tied for 70th, senior Jonah Pulido (+29 171; 85-86) tied for 73rd, and sophomore Jack Simpson (+38 180; 87-93) tied for 92nd. Seniors Andrew Barwick (+21 92) and Cooper Black (+17 88) each competed in one round.
Lemont earned its state finals berth after placing third at the IHSA Lemont Sectional at Wedgewood Golf Course in Plainfield, the school said. Scott earned all-sectional honors after tying for second with a -3 69.
