Supporting Your Child in the First Months of Preschool

Simple ways parents can nurture confidence, independence, and joy at the start of school

Starting preschool is a big milestone—for both children and parents! The first months are full of new routines, friends, and learning experiences. While it can take time for children to adjust, the support they receive at home makes a huge difference in helping them feel confident and secure. Here are some simple ways parents can help:

1. Establish Routines at Home
Children thrive on predictability. Create consistent morning and bedtime routines so your child knows what to expect. A calm start to the day and plenty of rest at night set the stage for success at school.
2. Talk About Their Day
Even if your child shares only small details, ask open-ended questions like, “What was your favorite part of today?” or “Who did you play with?” This builds communication skills and shows that you value their school experiences.
3. Practice Independence
Encourage your child to do little tasks on their own, such as putting on shoes, washing hands, or cleaning up toys. These skills build confidence and make the preschool environment feel familiar.
4. Read Together Daily
Reading aloud every day builds vocabulary, sparks imagination, and fosters a love of learning. Even a few minutes each evening creates a special parent-child connection.
5. Provide Comfort and Encouragement
It’s normal for children to feel separation anxiety at first. Reassure them with a quick, positive goodbye in the morning, and celebrate their efforts at the end of the day.
6. Create Playtime at Home
Free play builds social, problem-solving, and motor skills. Provide opportunities for your child to play with siblings, neighbors, or family members—this reinforces the skills they’re practicing in preschool.
7. Stay Connected with Teachers
A strong partnership between home and school helps your child feel supported. Read Everest Academy newsletters, attend family events, and check in with teachers when needed. When children see parents engaged in their school life, they feel more secure and proud of their new community.
At Everest Academy, we are committed to partnering with families during this important transition. Together, we can help every child grow in confidence, joy, and a love of learning during these first precious months of preschool.
