59 Displaced After Partial Collapse Of Apartment Roof During Storm

One women was injured after a portion of the roof was blown off Tuesday night.

MUNDELEIN, IL — One woman was injured and 59 people were displaced after the roof of an apartment complex partially collapsed amid stormy weather Tuesday night in Mundelein.

Authorities said a 30-foot by 30-foot section of the roof of a two-story apartment building at 32 Washington Boulevard was blown off the southwest coroner of the building fat about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Fire crews first at the scene helped residents evacuate the apartment complex, and once the structure was deemed safe to enter, fire and police personnel escorted residents to their units to gather their essential belongings, according to a news release from the Mundelein Fire Department.

One woman complained of arm pain after being hit by a piece of drywall. She was transported to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

In total, 59 residents from 21 units were displaced because of the partial roof collapse, according to the news release. Residents who did not have family to stay with were taken to the Mundelein Fire Department to wait for a warming bus from the American Red Cross to arrive and take them to a shelter, authorities said.

The complex has been deemed uninhabitable.
