Coroner IDs Man Killed In Mundelein Stabbing

The man killed in the stabbing has been identified as Michael Murphy, 53, of Mundelein.

MUNDELEIN, IL — The Lake County Coroner's Office has identified a 53-year-old man who was stabbed to death in Mundelein early Monday.

Michael Murphy, 53, died from multiple sharp force injuries, according to preliminary results from an autopsy, which were released Tuesday afternoon.

The Mundelein Police Department first responded to the reported stabbing at the Park Butterfield apartment complex in the 1400 block of Downing Place at about 5:10 a.m. on Monday, according to a news release from the police department.

When officers arrived, they found an unconscious man inside an apartment unit. He was bleeding from his upper torso, according to authorities

Police tried to talk to a 44-year-old woman inside the apartment, who authorities believe called 911 to report the incident, but she was incoherent and uncooperative, according to the news release. Paramedics transported both the man and woman to Advocate Condell Medical Center where the man died shortly after arriving at the hospital, authorities said.

While checking the apartment for additional witnesses or injured persons, it became apparent there had been an altercation and that the man had sustained his fatal injuries inside the apartment, police said. The man suffered several stab wounds to his chest and neck area.

The 44-year-old woman is still being treated at the hospital and is considered a suspect in the death investigation, police said Monday. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Police records show previous reports of domestic-related calls for service between the man and woman, police said Monday.

The Mundelein Police Department is working with the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, the Lake County Coroner’s Office, and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office to investigate the death.

Police believe this is an isolated incident and there is no ongoing danger to the public, according to authorities.
