Coroner IDs Navy Recruit Who Died In Fatal Shooting At Great Lakes Naval Station

Preliminary results from an autopsy show Kayshawn Wilkerson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to authorities.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — The Lake County Coroner's Office has identified the 18-year-old navy recruit who was fatally shot at Great Lakes Naval Station on Wednesday.

Kayshawn Wilkerson, who is originally from Ocala, Florida, and was most recently stationed at the Great Lakes training facility, died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Lake County Coroner's Office news release. Preliminary results from an autopsy show the gunshot wound appears to be self-inflicted.

An investigation into the "circumstances surrounding the incident is underway," Lt. Beau Nickerson, a public affairs officer at Great Lakes Naval Station, told Patch this past week.
