Coroner Works To ID 1 Killed In Fiery Crash Over The Weekend In Lake County: Coroner

NORTH CHICAGO, IL — A person killed in a fiery two-car crash in North Chicago over the weekend has not yet been identified, authorities said Tuesday.

The collision happened at about 12:05 p.m. on Sunday in the 2900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. When fire crews arrived, they found one of the vehicles on fire.

The driver inside the car that was on fire was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary results from an autopsy performed on Monday show the driver died from blunt force injuries as a result of the crash. Toxicology testing, including carbon monoxide testing, is pending, according to the coroner's office.

Positive identification of the man killed in the crash is awaiting conclusion of further scientific studies, authorities said.

"We suspect we know who it is, but positive ID will rely on further studies," said Stephen Newton, deputy chief with the Lake County Sheriff's Office. The coroner's office will use dental comparison to positively ID the person, he said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
