Fremont Student Accused Of Social Media Threat To School

An investigation by Fremont School District 79, Mundelein police and the Lake Co. Sheriff's Office said no substantiated threats were found.

MUNDELEIN, IL — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said an 11-year-old male student from Fremont School District 79 is being referred to the Juvenile Justice System after an investigation determined he made a post on social media, holding his fingers and hand in the shape of a gun. Fremont School District 79 officials said they are grateful to the individual who saw and quickly reported a "concerning" social media post to law enforcement Monday, and also increased police presence at Fremont schools.

In statement posted to Facebook Monday, the district said they were contacted by the Lake County Sheriff's Office, who along with the Mundelein Police Department conducted an immediate investigation into the reported incident.

Mundelein police, the Lake County Sheriff's Office and the school district investigated the incident, and the school district said no "substantiated threats" were determined.

On Monday, the school said the student involved in the incident wasn't at school, and would be "subject to appropriate disciplinary action based upon the guidelines set forth in Board policy and the District’s student code of conduct."

Detectives were also able to determine the boy didn’t have access to any firearms, according to a statement on the Lake County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.

In a comment under the original Facebook post, the district added, "FSD79 will continue to provide as much information as possible, while still adhering to the applicable laws that protect students. Again, please know that the issue has been thoroughly addressed and there is no substantiated threat at this time."
