Gurnee Man Fled High-Speed Crash, Leaving Injured Woman Behind In Richmond, Police Say

A Gurnee man was arrested after he allegedly crashed his car into a pole at a high rate of speed and fled the scene on foot, leaving an injured female passenger behind in Richmond.

Cody W. Washington, 24, of the 400 block of Gould Street in Gurnee, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury, a Class 4 felony, and failure to report an accident with injury, a Class 2 felony.

The Richmond Police Department arrested Washington around 7 a.m. Wednesday following a single-vehicle crash near Route 12 and Route 31 in Richmond.

Washington was driving a vehicle and struck a telephone pole at the intersection. A female passenger in his vehicle suffered injuries, police said.

According to police radio traffic, a police officer reported around 2:30 a.m. that Washington’s vehicle was traveling at around 100 mph on Route 12 before crashing.

Officers reportedly found the man hours later inside a nearby restaurant after he fled on foot.

In addition to his felony charges, Washington was cited for reckless driving, improper turn at an intersection, failure to give info or render aid, leaving the scene of an accident with vehicle damage, improper traffic lane usage, driver’s license not on person, speeding 35+ mph over the limit and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Washington remains held in the McHenry County jail on a $25,000 bond. He will appear in court again on October 23 for a preliminary hearing.
