Gurnee Senior Facility Evacuated As Flames Fill Roof, Attic

Village officials said several fire departments responded to assist Gurnee Fire Department crews fight senior facility fire March 5.

GURNEE, IL — The Gurnee Fire Department responded to a fire that broke out at Tuesday afternoon a Theresa Home senior facility in the 6400 block of Cunningham Court, village officials said, causing everyone inside to be evacuated. When fire crews arrived, flames were showing from the attic and roof of the two-story facility, causing the building's working fire detection system and sprinklers to not activate, according to officials.

Crews from the Grayslake Fire Department, Libertyville Fire Department and Newport Fire Protection District were called to assist at the scene, officials said. Mundelein Fire Department, Beach Park Fire Department, Zion Fire Department, and Lake Ville Fire Department covered Fire Station 1 and Fire Station 2 in Gurnee.

All 17 residents and occupants of the building were rescued without injury and were relocated to other Theresa Homes facilities, the village reported.

Officials haven't confirmed the cause of fire, however, they add it might have started due to fireplace embers igniting the cedar roof, before spreading throughout the roof and into the attic.
