Libertyville-Area Schools Announce Friday Closures

A winter storm expected to bring blizzard-like conditions is set to start Thursday night and continue through Friday.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL — With blizzard-like conditions in the forecast today, several area children will be getting a snow day.

In Libertyville, District 70 and District 128 school districts have announced they will close schools for the day. District 120 schools in Mundelein have also called off school, as have several other Lake County school districts.

  • Fremont Public Library in Mundelein

A winter storm warning took effect at 3 a.m. Friday in Lake County and will remain in effect through noon Saturday. Heavy snow, strong winds and dangerous travel conditions are expected.

In addition to total snow accumulation surpassing 8 inches of snow, wind gusts of up to 45 mph are in the forecast. Weather officials have said the winter storm will make travel very difficult to impossible and areas where there is blowing snow, visibility could be significantly reduced.

Snow will mix with rain near Lake Michigan and limit snow accumulations after mid Friday morning. Elsewhere in Lake County, snow rates may exceed one inch per hour at times.

The high wind gusts are expected mainly on Friday evening.
