Houser, of Libertyville, will be attending Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, and plans to pursue a career in computer science, according to the National Merit Scholarship press release.

Winners had to first take the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test as junior and then complete a detailed scholarship application, which included writing an essay, describing leadership positions and contributions in school and community activities, showing an outstanding academic record and being endorsed and recommended by a high school official. Semifinalists then took the SAT or ACT and needed to earn scores that confirmed their performance on the initial qualifying test, according to a news release.
