Libertyville’s Ansel Brainerd Cook Chapter, NSDAR supports Lake County Honor Flight “Mail Call”

What is an Honor Flight? Honor Flight is a national organization that transports America’s veterans (all expenses paid for the veteran) on one day or multi-day flights to Washington D.C. to see the memorials of the wars they served in. Each Honor Flight Network is an independent non-profit hub that works together to honor our nation’s heroes for a trip of a lifetime. There are over 128 hubs across the country that form the Honor Flight Network.

For the past 15 years the Ansel Brainerd Cook Chapter has been active in participating and supporting the Honor Flight programs.

We have had our members serve as guardians for the Veterans on the Honor Flights, our members and families have attended the “Welcome Home” ceremonies for Chicago Honor Flight, Lake County Honor Flight and Operation Her Story, an all-female Honor Flight. We have written over 7000 “Mail Call” cards and letters thanking the veterans for their service and sacrifice. Each veteran on an Honor Flight is given a bag filled with letters, cards and drawings from the community, therefore enhancing their experience.

Ansel Brainerd Cook chapter, NSDAR has been actively involved with the Lake County Honor Flight. The Lake County Honor Flight offers a multi-day trip, and this hub does not leave anything out. They are currently preparing for their 29th flight. Since 2013, Lake County Honor Flight began their mission of serving the veterans. They have flown 614 veterans, on 28 flights and currently have a waiting list of over 169 veterans.
