Man, 20, Drowns At Illinois Beach State Park: Authorities

The 20-year-old Waukegan man who was pulled from Lake Michigan Tuesday evening has been identified as Luis Espinoza Contreras.

ZION, IL — A 20-year-old Waukegan man has died following a drowning at Illinois Beach State Park in Zion.

The Zion Fire Department, Winthrop Fire Department and Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police was called to the area of Illinois Beach State Park, 1 Lake Front Drive in unincorporated Zion, at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a swimmer who'd gone under the water and not resurfaced, according to a news release from the Lake County Coroner's Office.

The missing swimmer, a 20-year-old Waukegan man, was found and removed from the water by rescue divers, according to the coroner's office. He was taken to Vista Medical Center East, where he was pronounced dead.

On Wednesday, the coroner's office identified the man as Luis Espinoza Contreras, 20, of Waukegan. Examination results indicate Contreras' death is consistent with drowning.

The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
