Man Who Kidnapped Woman, Locked Her In Barn Sentenced

A Round Lake Beach man has been sentenced to two years of periodic imprisonment after pleading guilty to kidnapping a woman from her Mundelein home and locking her in a barn.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said in March that a 41-year-old Mundelein woman had been abducted by an ex-partner, identified as Claudio Gutierrez-Ocampo, 44, of the 200 block of Park Drive in Round Lake Beach.

The victim was at home sleeping at her Mundelein residence. She was awoken when Gutierrez-Ocampo entered her home, went to her bedroom and started an argument with her, Covelli said.

Gutierrez-Ocampo forced the victim outside of the residence, battered her and forced her into his van, Covelli said. The victim’s adult daughter woke up after hearing the commotion.

Gutierrez-Ocampo allegedly drove the victim to a property he owns in the 32800 block of Fairfield Road in unincorporated Mundelein .He locked the victim into a makeshift bedroom inside of a barn on the property and forcefully removed the victim’s clothing, Covelli said.

When the victim’s daughter realized Gutierrez-Ocampo abducted her mother, she first thought to check the remote property on Fairfield Road that she knew was owned by Gutierrez-Ocampo.

She arrived and saw Gutierrez-Ocampo’s van at the property, went to the barn and tried to get in, but Gutierrez-Ocampo had the barn locked, Covelli said. The victim’s daughter called 911 around 1:30 a.m. Friday and sheriff’s deputies responded.

Sheriff’s deputies were able to rescue the victim from the barn and place Gutierrez-Ocampo into custody, Covelli said. The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the incident.

Gutierrez-Ocampo was indicted on two counts of kidnapping, attempted criminal sexual assault, unlawful restraint and residential burglary. On Thursday, Gutierrez-Ocampo entered into a negotiated plea deal with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office.

He pleaded guilty to one count of kidnapping and prosecutors dismissed his other charges. A Lake County judge approved the plea deal and sentenced Gutierrez-Ocampo to 24 months of periodic imprisonment and 30 months of probation.

Gutierrez-Ocampo was also ordered to not possess drugs, alcohol or any weapons.

He will receive 105 days of credit for time already served in the Lake County Jail.
