Mundelein Man Sentenced For Sexually Assaulting Juvenile Family Member

A Mundelein man has been sentenced to nine years in prison after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a family member who was under 18 years old, court records show.

Mario Nakayama, 55, of the 0-100 block of North Garfield Avenue in Mundelein, was indicted by a grand jury in December 2018 on six counts of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony, and five counts of sexual relations within families, a Class 3 felony.

A grand jury indictment said Nakayama committed at least two separate acts of sexual assault on the female victim, who was under 18. Both assaults occurred sometime between March 2015 and March 2018, the indictment said.

The indictment said Nakayama committed additional sex acts on the victim between March 2018 and November 2018. Nakayama was arrested in November 2018 and released from the Lake County Jail in January 2019 after posting 10% of a $250,000 bond.

Nakayama recently entered into a negotiated plea deal with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, court records show.

He pleaded guilty to one count of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony, in exchange for his other charges being dismissed. Lake County Judge Victoria Rossetti approved the plea deal and sentenced Nakayama to nine years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Nakayama will receive 51 days of credit for time already served in the Lake County Jail and 1,014 days for credit on electronic monitoring and home confinement.

His sentence will be served at 85% in accordance with truth-in-sentencing guidelines, sentencing documents show. Nakayama will also be required to register as a sexual predator.

Nakayama remains held in the county jail awaiting transfer to a state prison.
