Train Car Derails, Spills Non-Hazardous Material Near Antioch

A freight train car hauling non-hazardous material broke into two, causing a spill early Friday morning in Antioch, officials said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Antioch Fire Department responded around 1:45 a.m. Friday to the area of Route 83 and West Lakeshore Drive.

Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that a freight train was blocking several crossings.

One of the train cars, which was hauling some kind of non-hazardous material, failed and broke into two parts.

The train car was dragged 125 yards, causing some damage to the railroad tracks.

It also spilled the material it was carrying onto the ground, Covelli said.

Deputies assisted with traffic control for several hours. Covelli said all of the blocked crossings were clear by 6:30 a.m.

The Canadian National Railway sent crews to the scene, who remained there until Friday evening.
