Lincoln Park Zoo’s newest arrivals, six trumpeter swan cygnets, are the first of the endangered birds to hatch at the zoo since 2009.
"The chicks are destined for an exciting future, as they will eventually be released into the wild as part of a trumpeter swan reintroduction and recovery program that the zoo has been active in for more than a decade," zoo representatives said.
The Trumpeter Swan is North America's largest waterfowl and is among its rarest native birds, according to The Trumpeter Swan Society, a nonprofit organization that supports conservation and restoration of the species.
"To many people, it is the embodiment of grace, beauty, and unspoiled wildness," the site says. "It is also an inspiring reminder that we can save some species that have been reduced to near extinction."
