Become a Watchdog: Help Keep an Eye on Your School

The Citizen Watchdogs of Education program teaches residents how to take information about their school to create change and improve education. The North Side class is free on Thursday.

One group of citizens is spreading the word about how to become a Watchdog of Education, or a person who makes sure their school is making good choices.

The Better Government Association is non-profit group working to keep government transparent, and one of those ways is to engage residents in the conversation.

“We do two watchdog programs, and this one is focused on helping people understand their local schools, the CPS budget and how they can get more information about either of those,” said BGA representative Stephanie Simon. “…Hopefully attendees can take from this knowledge that there is information accessible to them about their schools and learn how to get this information to create change and improve education.”

It’s all a part of BGA’s continuing plan to educate residents and investigate problems that arise. The program operates under the premise that if residents can better inform themselves with the facts, they’ll be more likely to demand honest government.
