Beer, Music Flows Through Lincoln Avenue: Square Roots 2013 Photos
A celebration of craft beer and global music took over Lincoln Square Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the second annual Square Roots Festival.
Some drove for hours while others only walked a single block. Some came for the beer, others for the eclectic music, and still others for bacon sausage on a bun.
No matter the reason, thousands flocked to Lincoln Square Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the Square Roots Festival. Held on Lincoln Avenue from Wilson to Montrose, the celebration combined craft beer, global music and local food.
Dan Crzyowski traveled to Lincoln Square from Indiana for a rare sampling of Founders Brewery Doom, an American Double/Imperial ale that he described as "assaulting and boozy."

Crzyowski was in line more than 30 minutes before the release Friday night.
"It wouldn't have been worth it to come all this way and not taste it," he told Patch on Saturday.

The beer enthusiast was in luck. He got a drink before Founders ran out of the brew in 18 minutes Friday night.
But for Amanda Lewis, Square Roots was all about the music. With more than 60 acts on four different stages, the festival promised anything from Tahitian drums to local folk artist Jonas Friddle.
Lewis walked the two blocks from her home to the Lincoln and Montrose stage for Congress of Starling. There, she heard a mix of acoustic folk with some computerized tones.
Sadly, she would have to miss Gangstagrass, a group that combines the sounds of bluegrass and rap music. Think Jay-Z with down-home beats.

Square Roots, now in its second year, is organized by a partnership between the Old Town School of Folk Music and the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce.
Old Town joined the chamber and replaced its Folk & Roots festival with Square Roots, citing difficulties in renting Welles Park and complicated city processes.
