3 People File For Mokena Board Of Trustee Seats As Deadline Approaches

Three board seats are up for grabs in next spring's election and residents have until Monday to file papers with the village for candidacy.

MOKENA, IL — Three trustee seats on the Mokena Village Board will be up for grabs in next spring’s election and interested candidates still have time to file paperwork with the village ahead of Monday’s deadline.

The seats of trustees Debbie Engler, Joseph Budzyn, and James Richmond will be open after this term. Richmond resigned from the board earlier this month, which leaves his seat on the board open.

As of Wednesday, Engler was the only incumbent to file petition packets for the election, which will be held in April. Mokena residents Terry Germany and Terrence Smith have also filed petitions with the village, according to assistant village clerk Katie Pyznarski.

Residents have until 5 p.m. on Monday to file paperwork indicating their intention to seek the office of trustee.

The trustee seats are the only village board positions open as Mokena Mayor Frank Fleischer was sworn in for his third term in June 2021. Earlier this year, Fleischer quashed rumors that he would be retiring after social media posts suggested he may be leaving the post.

"In no way, shape or form am I going to resign," Fleischer said at a January meeting of the board. "So, you can just quit wasting time on social media saying 'Mayor Fleischer is leaving.'"

Four board seats are also open on Lincoln-Way District 210 Board of Education. Open seats up for election currently belong to Richard LaCien, Jr., Joseph Kirkeeng, Christopher Lucchetti and Board Secretary Beth Janus-Doyle.

As of Tuesday, the following residents have filed paperwork with Will County: Atherline Johnson, Tessa Quinlan, Gena Sambo, Caitlan Olejnik, and Nathan Sandova.

Mokena School District 159 also has three board seats open for the April election and as of Wednesday, the following residents have taken out petition packets and have until 5 p.m. on Monday to file them with the county:

Michelle Coleman, Maire Leahy, Samantha Tunney, Tracey Stefos, Thomas Freyer, Amanda Mintgomery, Julie Oost and Kelli MacMillan.
