88-Year-Old Woman ID'd As Victim In Fatal Mokena New Year's Crash: PD

The woman was a passenger in a vehicle that struck another vehicle after police say the driver failed to slow down to avoid the crash.

MOKENA, IL — An 88-year-old Bridgeview woman has been identified as the person who was killed in a New Year’s Day accident that took place at the intersection of I-80 and La Grange Road, police said on Tuesday.

Police did not release the woman’s name but said that she was a passenger in a 2008 Nissan Rogue that struck a 2023 Toyota Sienna with five passengers inside at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday evening, police said.

The driver of the Rogue, Antonio Randazzo, 82, Bridgeview, was cited for failure to reduce his speed to avoid an accident, Mokena police said on Tuesday. Randazzo struck the Sienna from behind after the vehicle had stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of I-80 and La Grange Road.

The 88-year-old woman was taken to Silver Cross Hospital, where she died on Sunday night, police said.

Police also said that the Mokena police officer who was involved in a separate crash while responding to the fatal crash has been on the force for less than a year. Police said that the officer had his patrol vehicle’s emergency lights on and was driving north through the intersection of 191st Street and La Grange Road when his vehicle was struck by a car traveling east on 191st, police said.

The officer sustained minor injuries and remains out of work due to doctors’ orders, police said. The officer, along with the driver of the other vehicle, were both taken to a local hospital for their injuries.
