MOKENA, IL — "Breathe, let go and it all shall flow."

That's the mantra at Soul Body Massage, the new massage spa located at 11006 Front St. East Suite #2 in Mokena and owned by life-long Mokena resident Rachel Pluister. She specializes in deep tissue and Swedish massage. She also offers hot stone reflexology, ear candling services and paraffin dip. Pluister is yoga certified and said she hopes to eventually expand to begin offering yoga instruction.

“I was in high school when I decided I wanted to be a massage therapist,” she said. “I always wanted to work with my hands.”

One of Pluister’s relatives was in a car accident that left the relative out of work, and she said the experience solidified for her the desire to help people with injuries who needed to go to work each day to provide for their families.

Pluister earned her certification in massage therapy in 2012 from Cortiva Institute in Chicago, and she has continued her education by staying up to date with the latest techniques in her field.

“And, growing older and more experienced with massage therapy, you realize that everyone has a to-do-list, right?! We’re always taking care of someone else. We kind of forget to nourish our own body, mind and spirit,” Pluister said. “To be able to have a place to provide that for people is, and has always been, my goal.”

Pluister described her relationships with her clients as "a dance around the table." She takes the time to get to know each of them and find out, without pushing or prying, what it is that they want from her services. This starts with a brief consultation for new clients, and she regularly checks up with them when they come back to find out if the services are working as they should.

"I use a lot of stretching in my services," she said. "I have a flow, a balance in my services. It's almost like a dance around the table, I like to call a massage. You're almost dancing with the client, providing them the comfort and release they need in their body or their mind. Some people want deep tissue massage, and some want light and fluffy. And then you have those that might just want to lay there and quiet down."

Being able to adapt to different bodies with different needs is what Pluister said is the mark of her style of massage therapy.

"It's that flow of being able to tie everything together, to make it feel effortless yet connected. Everything is very connected with the body," she said.

Services at Soul Body Massage are by appointment only. A one-hour massage costs $80, and an hour-and-a-half massage costs $120. Other costs vary by the type of service.
