Firefighters Battle Blaze At Mokena Apartment Building: Police

The fire took place Friday morning in an apartment building on First Street just east of Wolf Road.

MOKENA, IL — An apartment building in the 11100 block of First Street east of Wolf Road caught fire at approximately 6:47 a.m. Friday, according to Mokena Fire Protection District Chief Joseph Cirelli.

One person was treated at the scene for minor injuries, but refused to be taken to a hospital, Mokena Police Interim Chief Brian Benton said. No other injuries were reported.

People living in the apartment building were forced to leave, Benton said. The Red Cross was called in to help find temporary shelter for them, Benton said.

The Mokena Fire Protection District is investigating the cause of the fire, Cirelli said.

Patch went to the scene and saw that the majority of the damage seemed to be in one of the lower-level apartments in the two-story, four-unit building, with additional damage to the apartment just above it.

Mokena Fire Protection District was assisted by fire crews from Orland Park, Homer Township, Frankfort, New Lenox and Tinley Park, Cirelli said.
