Interim Water Supt. Approved by Mokena Village Trustees

The Mokena Village Board authorized a position for an interim water superintendent to take the place, for a while, of the recently retired Utilities Supt. Craig Heim.

Heim retired in April, after having served 37 years in the role of public works director.

Kirk Zoellner, assistant village administrator, said the duties that Heim served need to be fulfilled, so the board has agreed to utilize GovTemps for the services of an interim superintendent. The fee is $63 per hour, which covers the cost of their overheard and all applicable payroll taxes. It's a leasing arrangement that will help fill the void until later this year when a reorganization of existing management staff is anticipated to be completed, he said.

Landscaping Improvements Save Commuters Money

Improvements coming to the landscaped islands in Mokena's Hickory Creek commuter parking lot are expected to save customers supporting the lot roughly $16,000 annually in operating and maintenance costs.

Mokena trustees approved a contract with M&J Asphalt of Cicero in the amount of $79,718 to pave, stamp, and dye 28 interior islands, and to install decorative cobblestone in an additional 13 islands next to the train platform.

"The hardscaping being installed by M&J will replace landscaped beds in the islands that have over the years become increasingly weedy and extremely difficult to maintain in a cost-effective manner," according to Zoellner.
